Help Your Children Explore Their Jewish Heritage

The B’nai Tikvah Religious School is responsive to the needs of our families by offering a one day a week program on Tuesday afternoons.  We recognize that our students and their families need to make a powerful connection with their cultural and historical roots. We incorporate hands-on activities - from Israeli dance, art, drama and Jewish cooking, to re-enacting life cycle events, and celebrating holidays and Shabbat together.

Through these programs, our students and their families spend quality time together in a Jewish setting.  The individualized needs of each child are addressed by the instructors who continue to challenge our students with their advanced Jewish knowledge and experience.  An important mission of the Religious School states that every Jewish child deserves a quality Jewish education.  And because it’s never too late to start a religious education, we divide children by level, not by grade for Hebrew Studies.

Fees for B’nai Tikvah students are one of the most reasonably priced Jewish education options in the San Diego area. For further information about our innovative approach to Jewish education, please call Naomi Gabai-Fisher, Director of Education

    B’nai Tikvah Teen Group
Open to the Jewish Community…For the special needs of teenagers.
B'nai Tikvah offers their new Teen Group which meets every other Wednesday at the Temple in Vista
The Group is Free and Open to ALL Jewish Teens, ages 13-18, regardless of affiliation.
Membership at B’nai Tikvah is NOT required.

This is a Post B’nai Mitzvah Program designed to provide hands-on experience in the various aspects of building & maintaining a Jewish community. Teens in this group enjoy a wide variety of stimulating programs that foster intellectual and spiritual growth, leadership skills, a spirit of community service & ultimately, lifelong bonds.

The B’nai Tikvah Teens will join Cantor Larry Kornit for interesting discussions on current events, Jewish values, Torah and prayer studies and a light dinner.

In addition to the bi-monthly discussions, the Teen Group will also have an opportunity to join Temple Solel’s Teen Group led by Craig Parks for special events and activities throughout the year.

"Our teens represent the best of our future and it is our responsibility to give them not only the educational skills, but also the social and spiritual skills to be well-rounded individuals," says Cantor Kornit.

    Jewish History & Culture:

    3rd/4th/5th Grades
This is an exciting curriculum; we cover ancient Jewish history up to the Bar Kokhba Revolt. Students continue studying the later Prophets Elijah through Jeremiah, Ezra & Nehemiah & understanding Jewish life in Bible times. Selections from the Five Books of Moses are analyzed & we review each Jewish holiday.

    6th/7th Grades
` In the fall, students focus on the development of the modern State of Israel. Mid-winter the class learns  about the socio-cultural environment which led to the Holocaust & the Holocaust timeline, emphasizing Jewish heroes like Anne Frank, Raul Wallenberg, Sugihara & Janusz Korzak. In the spring, our studies continue into the rebuilding of modern Jewish life in Europe today. Supplemental lessons include other Jewish heroes & the values they display. Playlets, short stories, adventure stories, songs & first person narratives put a personal spin on these historic personalities. The class also reviews each of the Jewish holidays.

    Hebrew Studies:

    Beginning to Intermediate Hebrew

The students learn the alef-bet and vowels, blend phonetic units and write in block print.  The class continues with the system of brachot – blessings and main body of our morning prayers – Barachu, Shema, Ve-ahavta. They learn about the Hebrew root system to decode and derive meaning from the prayers, to track their reading and become more fluent and confident.

    Pre-B'nai Mitzvah Hebrew
This year, the 6th & 7th graders focus on the Kabbalat Shabbat – Friday Evening Service as well as specific pieces of the Shabbat Morning Service.  Learning the liturgical melodies, tracking and decoding prayer material is key to understanding and participating as adult Jews during synagogue services.  The students also become familiar with reading Torah calligraphy this year. Graduation of the 7th graders includes written essays and preparation for leading the Shabbat graduation service.

    Tefillah, Prayer, Torah, Holiday Activities

During our group period we review the weekly Torah portion; discussing the midrash stories in Torah Toons. We also read selected Torah story playlets. Tefillah, this year, focuses on the Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat Service, empowering students to participate in our monthly Friday Evening Family Services. Group activities include preparing for the Hanukkah & Purim plays, mitzvah projects, decorating the sukkah, Tu B’Shevat, baking hamantaschen, model Passover seder, preparation for monthly Family Shabbat school presentations & congregational holiday celebrations.
