The best
start for a lifetime of Jewish learning - B’nai Tikvah
The Best Start For A
Lifetime of Learning -
the B’nai Tikvah Religious
School

The New
Congregation B’nai Tikvah, a growing North County synagogue, has
many educational opportunities for young people. The Religious
School offers Hebrew and Jewish studies with a caring, creative
hands-on approach. The B’nai Tikvah teens connect with other youth
through our new youth group organized by Cantor Larry. Our teens
participate in community youth events, summer camping, and
experience our heritage first hand. B’nai Tikvah provides Jewish
educational opportunities for the whole family including Family
Shabbat experiences and other family programs.
The
B’nai Tikvah Religious School is responsive to the needs of our
families by offering a one day a week program on Tuesday
afternoons. We recognize that our students and their families need
to make a powerful connection with our cultural and historical
roots. We incorporate hands-on activities for our students - from
Israeli dance, art, drama or Jewish cooking, to re-enacting life
cycle events, celebrating Shabbat together with class services and
dinners or creating our own ritual objects. Through these programs,
our students and their families spend quality time together in a
Jewish setting. The individualized needs of each child are
addressed by the instructors who continue to challenge our students
with their advanced Jewish knowledge and experience. An important
mission of the Religious School states that every Jewish child
deserves a quality Jewish education.
Fees for B’nai
Tikvah students are one of the most reasonably priced Jewish
education options in the San Diego area. For further information
about our innovative approach to Jewish education, please call Naomi
Gabai-Fisher, Director of Education, at 760-941-9858.

Curriculum Summary 2009-2010
Cultural
Studies
-
4th
/ 5th Grades
This year,
students study Jewish life in the Middle Ages through
emphasizing Sefardi and Ashkenazi Jewish cultural life and
heritage including life in the shtetl. They participate in
Ashkenazi & Sefardi Food Days, Yiddish karaoke, as well as
projects like “build a shtetl” and design a hamza. The
choose-your-own-adventure series brings the Spanish Inquisition
historical experience to life. A survey of the Judges and
Prophets includes Joshua through Jeremiah, Ezra and Nehemiah.
The class also reviews each of the holidays.
-
6th
/ 7th Grades
This year,
students study American Jewish history and immigration
highlighting our families’ personal stories and modern European
Jewish history. Plays, short stories and
choose-your-own-adventure stories, songs and first person
narratives put a personal spin on this period. The class also
reviews each of the holidays.
Hebrew
The students are
divided into three Hebrew reading levels : beginner, middle and
pre-B’nai Mitzvah:
-
Beginning
HebrewThe
students learn the alef-bet and vowels, blend phonetic units and
write in block print.
-
Middle
Level Hebrew
– This year the students learn the main body of our tefillah
prayers – the Amidah, the prayers of peace, thanks, and
holiness. They learn about the Hebrew root system in order to
decode and derive meaning from the prayers, to track their
reading, and become more fluent and confident.
-
Pre-Bnai
Mitzvah Hebrew
– This year, the 12 year olds focus on the Torah Service from
“Ayn Kamokha” through “Etz Hayim Hi”. Learning the
liturgical melodies, tracking and decoding prayer material is
key to understanding and participating in synagogue services
later in life as Jewish adults. The students also become
familiar with reading Torah calligraphy. Graduation of the 7th
graders includes written essays and preparation for leading the
Shabbat graduation service.
Tefillah,
Prayer, Torah, Holiday Activities
During the week,
we review the weekly Torah portion by participating in the playlets
of Sedra Scenes. Tefillah focuses on the Friday evening
Kabbalat Shabbat Service encouraging our students to participate in
our monthly Friday Evening Family Services. Group activities also
include preparing for the Hanukkah and Purim plays, decorating the
sukkah, Tu B’Shevat seder, baking hamentaschen, model Passover seder,
preparation for monthly Family Shabbat school presentations and
congregational holiday celebrations. |
